During the years 1973-74, when Jimmy Carter was still governor of GA, he was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. Several of us taught him to roll a kayak and ran the Chattooga River (think Deliverance) with Carter on three occasions.
On the last trip — a raft run of Section 4 (the most formidable part of the Chattooga which is regularly run), he was accompanied by Rosalynn. At Seven-foot Falls, the guide missed his line and spilled all passengers, including himself and Carter. Only Rosalynn stayed in the raft as it righted itself, digging in with her paddle to collect the swimmers and bring them to shore. How tough is that?!
